Basker Hval - Jezero (Track Spotlight!)

Space whales raining down terror

We all know Roy saw attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, but little did we know what it must have sounded like being inside one during the siege. Emergency red lighting illuminating the narrow decks, bursts of fire forcing its way through security doors, must have been hell!

With Basker Hval I believe we are a step closer to experiencing what that would have been like! But first some backstory. Basker Hval began in a modest apartment in southern Copenhagen and was the brainchild of conversations about extended existence, philosophy, and the universe beyond our own. With Mikkel Aksglæde at the helm a beautiful nightmare was born.

In focus today is the track Jezero off the latest release II, our first listen to the works of Basker Hval.
The track at its core, in my eyes of course, is multiple layers of emergency alarms. It is the warning, wailing sounds of a starship hit by a disruptor torpedo, the sounds of a crew in total panic, and the sounds of the incoming void ready to welcome the crew into its eternal embrace.

Jezero is a oppressing slog, just under 5 mins of utmost anarchy. Each layer of the track giving its own impression on the listener from piercing high alarm bells to the thud-thud-thud of returning fire bass. The middle section offers a brief interlude, a place of calm in the track. Was this where the ship finally fell into two and the crew sucked out into the endless black? how many were left on board.

Evidently enough to turn back into the fray and begin the suppression again, laser repeaters and ballistic cannons on full blast in the final third, the captain finally disabling the alarm at 4:39, or through lack of O2 unable to continue the fight.

Atmospheric and anything-but apologetic, Jezero was a great intro for us here at Skyecity Synth into the works of Basker Hval and we look forward to hearing more.

In a single word to the question "recommended"? Highly!
